History

We're proud to have provided library services to area citizens since the 1960s

  • 1968-1978: Village of Carlock was served by the Corn Belt Library System bookmobile.
  • 1979 (March 1): Grand opening of the White Oak Township Library in Room 110 of the Carlock Grade School.
  • 1979 (December): The building at 202 East Washington Street (former bank building) purchased with funds provided by Audrey Burdette, in memory of her late husband and former Carlock resident, Carey E. Burdette.
  • 1980 (March): Students from the Carlock Elementary School carried books from the school to the new library building.
  • 1980 (June): More than 100 residents and guests attended the dedication of the Carey E. Burdette Memorial Library.
  • 1989: Service area was expanded following a successful referendum in Dry Grove and Kansas townships. The library became a public library district serving Dry Grove, Kansas, and White Oak townships.
  • 1991: Friends of the Library organization was formed to support the library.
  • 2000: The Board of Trustees authorized the purchase and remodeling of the adjacent building at 204 East Washington, former home of Stevens Grocery.
  • 2005 (July 1): The name was legally changed to Carlock Public Library District, with “in the Carey Burdette Building” added by Board of Trustees to continue honoring the Burdette family’s donation.
  • 2014: The adjacent building at 206 East Washington was purchased. A major fundraising and remodeling project began shortly after the purchase.
  • 2017: Remodeling project complete. A “bookcase” mural in the entrance of the library acknowledges citizens who donated to the project.
